Sixth Avenue Remodel and Garage Addition - San Francisco Year Originally Built: 1910 Sq. Feet of Building: 2,880sf Contractor: Mayta and Jensen & Keegan Construction Remodeling this 90-year-old single-family residence was an enticing challenge. The clients wanted to add a two-car garage – 30 inches below the existing street level while keeping the house’s original proportions. They also wanted to reconfigure the second floor to enlarge the master bedroom and bathroom, add larger closets, and a laundry area. Skylights were added to bring natural light into the house and to enhance the feeling of interior space. In order to place the garage below the first floor, the basement level of the existing house had to be excavated. The opening width of the new garage door aligns with the bay window above. Brick planters were placed adjacent to the driveway to incorporate the new retaining wall and to add a bit of greenery to the facade.
