Child Protection Center Remodel at San Francisco General Hospital - San Francisco Year Originally Built: 1932 Sq. Feet of Building: 102,000sf Sq. Feet of Project: 4,000sf Owner: City and County of San Francisco Contractor: Faier Builders Final Construction Cost: $250,000 This project was designed for the use of the San Francisco Department of Social Services and the Children’s Home Society as a citywide central intake facility for abused children. A former basement hospital care area with an overabundance of ceiling ducts and pipes was converted to a counseling and intake center for children. A second smaller space is used as an assessment center for the San Francisco Unified School District. Although children are only at the center a short time until they are placed in foster homes, the design concept was to make their brief stay as calming and comfortable as possible. The children are met by social workers at the center and provided with a playroom to stay in while they are there. Light meals and baths are provided. Since most of the children are under the age of 12, including infants, the design is intended to respond to their needs. Offices and conference rooms are provided for the staff. Work was coordinated with the San Francisco Bureau of Architecture.
