Feet of Project: 1,300sf Owner: Rafael Rodriguez Contractor: ALCO construction Final Construction Cost: $150,000 An existing furniture store adjacent to Celia’s Mexican Restaurant was converted to additional seating area and new disabled accessible restrooms. Zachary Nathan Architect assisted the owner with city planning approvals for the restaurant expansion including a partial waiver of the parking requirement. The former furniture store building was redesigned to be a compatible addition to the existing restaurant creating a unified stucco façade along El Camino Avenue. Exterior signage was greatly simplified. The work included a seismic upgrade of the existing masonry furniture store and a new fire sprinkler system in the entire building. Inside the new seating area has booths and movable tables and is linked functionally and visually to the existing restaurant with a new opening in the concrete wall and other punched openings. A skylight provides balanced light in the center of the space. Artificial lighting is provided with wall sconces and suspended ceiling fixtures.
